Reflection:
While this unit was short, I gained valuable skills throughout from responding appropriately to emails to creating performance appraisal forms. I especially enjoyed researching and framing response emails in a way that makes people feel heard. It is one thing to simply reply, it is another to use diplomacy to seek more details, investigate, and enforce rules/expectations.
For many years, I have done performance reviews for staff I supervise. I have used a variety of forms, but the best ones I have used are behavior. This unit emphasized the benefits of behavioral reviews and afforded me another opportunity to create an appraisal form and get feedback. It is also important to use a performance review to find out more about employee goals and desires. I have found so many ways to increase employee engagement and job satisfaction simply by learning goals and finding ways to make them happen. It is also important to remember, a performance review is not the place to tell an employee that they aren’t doing a good job. My professional opinion is that if you haven’t addressed the issue with a staff member, don’t use it to judge someone by.
